For
those who want to see, taste and explore real rural France, or to enjoy a truly

hillside village of Pomie, Maison Chambon, a refurbished 19th century home is
one of the most charming houses in the area.

to the side of Maison Chambon, is a fully-fitted, self-contained apartment (gite),
which has a double bedroom, kitchen/dining room and bathroom. The courtyard directly
outside its front door, is perfect for al fresco dining. The apartment backs onto
the substantial garden (2 acres!) , which houses the latest addition to the property
- a new swimming pool. The main house has just two occupants, so guests are guaranteed
a lot of privacy, while enjoying the pool. The
property is owned by an accomplished artist and sculptor, who also runs a gallery
on-site (separate to the house). He and his wife, while not intrusive, are a very
warm, welcoming and entertaining couple, who delight in giving advice on what
to do, where to go, where to eat and drink, in order for their guests to reap
the full benefits of their stay at Maison Chambon. The
countryside around Pomie is fascinating. The majestic Dordogne river cuts a swathe
through the valley beneath the village, providing the perfect amenity for visitors
who enjoy fishing, canoeing or swimming. There are also some awe inspiring lookout
points, where visitors have an eagle-view of the river, the vast expanse of land
and the mountains beyond. If you enjoy walking, there is no shortage of wonderful
walks, immediately accessed from the property and also close-by. The
medieval town of Martel, just four miles away, is home to a busy market, which
takes place each Wednesday and Saturday. Here, in the environs of historic and
architectural gems, visitors can chose from in-season vegetables and fruit, to
local cheeses, foie Gras and of a course the delectable local 'Cahors' wine. There
are also colourful craft, clothing, and jewellery stalls. The cobblestone, partially
enclosed square is the venue for a weekly dance during the summer months. From
early in the evening until early in the morning, locals and tourists alike are
entertained by the sounds of a big band and practically everyone takes to the
dance floor. For
those interested in ambling around scenic and historic sites, please note, there
are three 'Les Plus Villages de France', located within a twenty-minute radius
of Maison Chambon. These villages of Carennac,
Loubressac , Martel,
Colonge la rouge,
Rocamadour and Autoire
are a visual treat. There are a number of marvellous
painted prehistoric caves and stunning chateaux in the immediate vicinity
too, including Castelnau,
Belcastel,
Fenelon
and Marqueyssac. The
town of Souillac,
which hosts an annual
jazz festival in July, is another nearby town with interesting shops, galleries
and cafes. There are a whole range of interesting day trips which can be taken,
using Pomie as a base, such as the major Dordogne attractions of Sarlat
la Caneda, Domme, La
Roque Gageac and Beynac.
